Find Metro Jail Releases

To find someone released from Salt Lake County Metro Jail, first separate a true community release from a transfer to another custodian. The Salt Lake County Sheriff records movements from this county jail, while state, federal, and immigration agencies track people received into their own systems. A Metro Jail release search therefore starts with the official county movement record and follows the destination when custody continued elsewhere. Exact dates, authority, and receiving agencies may require a written release-record request. That source-based route avoids treating an absent roster name as proof that the person walked free.

Metro Jail Release Destinations

A Metro Jail outgoing movement ends one Salt Lake County Sheriff custody event. It may lead to the community after bail, dismissal, a judge's order, probation, or completion of a county sentence. It may instead lead to the Utah Department of Corrections, ICE, the U.S. Marshals Service, another county jail, a hospital, or another structured placement. The words used in the record matter. A transfer is not the same event as release to the community, even though the person has left the Metro Jail roster.

The official Jail In/Out Docket is the first online source for recent movement. The daily Roster serves a different purpose: it is a snapshot of people occupying county jail beds. A name missing from that snapshot could reflect release, transfer, or timing. When the outgoing entry does not settle the destination, the Sheriff booking/release report is the stronger record.

Important: Confirm who received the person after Metro Jail. Ending county custody does not prove that all custody or supervision ended.

Confirm a Metro Jail Release

Use the county system before searching UDC merely because the arrest happened in Utah. A pretrial detainee or person serving a county sentence may never have a UDC record. Start with the newest dated movement document, then compare the current roster only to test whether the person still appears in the daily bed count. The Salt Lake County released inmate search explains the broader path when the custodian is uncertain.

  1. Open the Sheriff's roster page and choose the latest Jail In/Out Docket, not just the Roster PDF.
  2. Match the full name and SO number when available. Check an adjacent date if processing crossed midnight.
  3. Read any stated disposition or destination without changing its wording. Do not convert a handoff into a community release.
  4. Check the court case for the legal order, bond, dismissal, or sentence outcome that may explain the move.
  5. Request the booking/release report when the actual time, authority, or receiving agency is needed.

VINE can add a release or transfer alert for participating Utah custodians, but it is a notification layer. It should be confirmed against the Sheriff's record. A court judgment can explain the legal basis, yet it does not always establish the moment that physical custody ended.

Note: The Sheriff says its general line does not disclose a prisoner's release date, so the docket and written record are the reliable routes.

Metro Jail Release Records

Salt Lake County Sheriff records are available through the county's NextRequest portal or the Sheriff's GRAMA form. A narrow request should name the person, aliases, SO number if known, booking date, Metro Jail, and court case. Ask for existing records showing the booking/release report, actual release date and time, release authority or disposition, and destination or receiving agency. GRAMA does not require an office to create a new custom report.

Jail information: 385-468-8400
Information line: Available 24 hours

The county GRAMA guide says inspection of public portions is free. The first 30 minutes of staff time are free, followed by stated staff and copy fees when applicable. An ordinary response is generally due within ten business days, though an extraordinary or large request may receive a later estimate. Photo identification is required before records are released, and protected personal details may be redacted.

Note: Ask for an existing release report and named fields rather than an unsourced list the Sheriff does not maintain.

Metro Jail Release Timing

The Corrections Bureau reports that booking averages six to eight hours. Intoxication, inability to complete the process, or noncompliance can make it longer. That booking estimate is not a release promise. Salt Lake County also documents that releases occur at all hours, so there is no single public pickup schedule to rely on.

Shortly before release, the Sheriff says a person receives free local calls to arrange pickup. The stated window is about 15 to 30 minutes before release. Family support is therefore event-driven. A court order or bail payment can authorize release while another hold, another case, identity review, or routine processing delays the exit. The actual Sheriff's release record remains more useful than an estimated time supplied by anyone else.

Metro Jail Bail Releases

Metro accepts bail in its Visiting Lobby at all hours. The Sheriff lists cash, cashier's checks, and certified checks as accepted forms and charges no county bail-payment fee. Check verification occurs during business hours. The SO number can be obtained online or by telephone and should be used to match payment to the right record.

Payment starts a release path; it does not guarantee immediate departure. Another court matter, hold, or transfer may control what happens next. County Pretrial Services also has nonfinancial release options for qualifying cases, with the court making the decision. Those routes differ from dismissal, time served, transfer, or a state parole release. The record should retain the exact release authority instead of grouping all exits as bond-outs.

Metro Jail ICE Transfers

The Sheriff's ICE dashboard reports aggregate jail and ICE interactions. The Sheriff says it does not take part in 287(g), determine immigration status, or make arrests based on immigration status. Even so, some county custody events end through release into ICE custody. That phrase describes a handoff, not release into the Salt Lake County community.

For a person-specific case, obtain the Metro Jail receiving-agency information and then use ICE's Online Detainee Locator. ICE says its locator includes current detainees and some people released from ICE custody during the prior 60 days. A blank result later is not historical proof. The county dashboard cannot identify a person, and an ICE result may not explain whether the later outcome was community release, removal, or another transfer.

Release
The named custodian ends its custody event.
Transfer
Another agency or facility receives the person.
Detainer
A request or hold tied to another authority that may affect the next destination.
Discharge
The end of a custody or supervision term, which is broader than leaving Metro Jail.

Metro Jail Release Operations

Metro opened in 2000. A 2025 county audit reported $27 million in deferred maintenance at Metro and $42.8 million across Metro and Oxbow. The county later described a plan that would free 64 Metro beds by ending a state competency-restoration contract while adding capacity at Oxbow. These operational changes help explain why placement may shift between facilities.

They do not change the release-record channel. Both jails use the Sheriff's centralized docket, roster, and records process. There is no separate Metro recent-release archive. Search the movement document for the custody event, follow any receiving agency, and use a GRAMA request when the online record lacks the exact fact needed.

After a Metro Jail Release

A community release may still carry a court date, probation term, pretrial condition, or other legal duty. A UDC transfer continues state custody. A UDC community placement or parole status remains under Adult Probation and Parole, while a federal or immigration handoff belongs in another agency's records. Confirm each layer with the office that created it.

For older county events, the online docket window may no longer show the date. About 60 daily entries were visible during the August 2026 research, but that was an observed interface window, not a retention rule. Request the Sheriff record, and use the court case as a durable legal cross-check. The best evidence is a directly issued or certified release record, followed by the agency's public status record and the controlling court or Board order.

Metro Jail Property Release

Property has its own Salt Lake County process and should not be used as a release-status proxy. The Sheriff permits third-party property release once in six months. The third party goes to Jail Administration, completes the in-person form, and presents government identification. The research reports pickup roughly 48 hours later. Jail Administration also handles signatures for property pickup, impound matters, powers of attorney, and other non-civil documents, with signed material generally available about 24 hours later.

Those steps are distinct from what a person receives during discharge and from the USCF appointment process. A property request can be completed while the person remains in custody, so it does not prove that Metro released anyone. Use the In/Out Docket and booking/release report for custody status. Use the property procedure only for belongings and signatures.
